Summer Reading
More Fire: How to Run the Kenyan Way
Toby Tanser, do-gooder and citizen of the world has turned
his golden touch to books with the release of More Fire: How to Run the Kenyan
Way. In his second book to focus on the magic that is Kenyan running, Tanser
goes beyond tips and techniques, delving instead into the heart and soul of the
country and culture and how they foster in runners an intense dedication to
training. The book is divided into four parts: the landscape and culture,
Kenya’s famous training camps and the famous three-a-day training regimen,
profiles of runners and coaches and finally a section on how you, the reader
and runner, can adopt the Kenyan training method as your own. Tanser is
donating all of his royalties right back to the country of his inspiration to
build a hospital with his charity Shoe4Africa. Shoe4africa.org
If any story can make shivers run up the spine of the
bravest person, it will be one of an adventurous excursion gone horribly wrong.
In 1967 a 24-year-old Joe Wilcox led a team of 12 climbers on a journey to the
summit of Mt. McKinley (North America’s tallest peak, now known more commonly as
Denali). Tragedy struck in the form of a giant storm, and only five men
survived in what remains as North America’s worst mountaineering disaster. In Forever on the Mountain expert climber and author James Tabor pursued scraps
of evidence and the knowledge of experts in the fields of forensics and psychology
to try to piece together what really happened in an effort to pull together a
complete story of the tragic journey. For any adrenaline junkies out there who
may not have time or ability to pursue the mountain, this book will make your
heart race and make you wonder about the risks men are willing to take for the
thrill of adventure. $15.95, Wwnorton.com
